The Boy from Tupelo

1935–1953

1. Childhood in Tupelo

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. He grew up in a modest home, surrounded by the music of the American South. Gospel, Country and Blues were part of everyday life and would later shape his unmistakable sound.

From an early age, Elvis was deeply moved by music. He listened to church choirs, local radio programs and the sounds of the streets. These early impressions became the foundation of his musical identity.

2. Family, Faith and Music

Elvis was especially close to his parents, Vernon and Gladys Presley. His mother played a central role in his life and encouraged his love of singing. The family did not have much money, but they shared a strong sense of faith, love and perseverance.

In church, Elvis discovered the emotional power of Gospel music. The voices, harmonies and spiritual intensity of those services stayed with him throughout his life.

3. The Road to Memphis

In 1948, the Presley family moved from Tupelo to Memphis, Tennessee. For the young Elvis, Memphis opened a new world. The city was alive with Blues, Gospel, Country and Rhythm & Blues.

He explored the streets, listened to local musicians and slowly began to dream of a life in music. The quiet boy from Tupelo was beginning the journey that would one day change popular music forever.
